INTERVIEW/Entrevue exclusive avec Stéphane Patry
Published by Kryshya on 2007/4/18

Stephane Patry exclusive interview. He talks about Georges St. Pierre loss to Matt Serra, about the UFC to come in Montreal, gives informations about TKO June 1st event and Nouveau Gladiateur TV reality show and also explains the legal issues between TKO Major League MMa and the IFL.
UF : Georges St. Pierre lost his belt to Matt Serra at UFC 69. Can you comment?
SP : For sure, everybody was shocked about this issue, but that's what make our sport so unique. That's why it is such a great sport. Everything can happens. Matt Serra had a great game plan and respected it perfectly.
UF : Georges mentioned in his post fight interview that he didn't felt as usual before the fight. Did you perceived a strange feeling in the moments preceding the fight?
SP : No. In the locker room, everything went well. I think that all happened when he entered to walk thru the octagon. Georges generally trains hard 6 to 8 weeks before the fight. For this fight, he only trained 4 weeks and he went 1 week in Europe then got ill for a few days when he went back to Canada.
His 4 weeks training was more a 3 weeks training sprint, maybe less. According to me, Georges lost his confidence when he entered the octagon, remembering himself he didn't train as hard as he should have did, or as he usually do. He had a lot of question in his head at that moment. He said in interview he felt his legs and shoulders were heavy, but in the locker room, he didn't felt this way at all. Maybe all those questions affected his confidence. He wasn't mentally in his best shape...
UF : Do you think Georges under estimated Matt Serra?
SP : I won't tell he under estimated Serra, but you can't fight at this level with a 3 weeks training camp only to face somebody who did train seriously for 7-8 weeks. Georges could have beaten Serra, but as I said, some little details can truly make the difference...
UF : Considering he wasn’t in his best shape, why Georges didn’t pulled out once again?
SP : The fight was already postponed twice and I figure out it became more and more delicate to do it again. And Georges decided to go anyway in Europe for a week during his training camp. It was his decision. He made some youthful mistakes while preparing for this fight and I sincerely think he’s gonna learn from it and come back stronger in a near future.
UF :As a fight sport’s fan, how did you felt that night?
SP : This was pretty difficult, but our job is to stay behind Georges and support him for the better and the worse. I often said to Georges that what is really important is the way you get up, not the way you fall. Maybe this loss came at the right time. If Georges learn something from it, it would have been a great thing. But if he doesn’t learn anything from his loss, this won’t be the last time this situation happens. Hopefully, Georges is an intelligent and mature young man and I think he’ll be able to figure out what he did right… or wrong.
UF : According to you, will Georges be mentally affected by this TKO loss in the future?
SP : I believe Georges has all the qualities to become stronger and I think it will happen this way. People surely might have many questions, but Georges is mentally strong and he’s well surrounded. We’ll all make sure this loss won’t have any consequences on his career.
UF : You surely saw Matt Hughes reaction after the fight. What are you thinking about his reaction?
SP : I always thought Matt Hughes has no class. Someday, he’ll be in the same situation and I don’t think we’re gonna laugh at him. I prefer to say : “no comment”. Everyone knows Hughes has no class at all, and he just prove it one more time. There’s nothing much to say about it.
UF : It seems that Matt Serra will get his first title defence against Matt Hughes. Why Hughes instead of Georges first?
SP : St. Pierre and Hughes both have this revenge match clause to their respective contract, but Matt simply lost his title before Georges.
UF : How much fight Georges will need to do before getting the chance to go for another title shot?
SP : One fight will be enough.
UF : Who will be Georges St. Pierre’s next opponent?
SP : Surely Josh Koscheck, but nothing’s official yet so I can’t confirm for the moment.
UF : Could Koscheck be a bad and dangerous matchmaking for Georges?
SP : Georges was the UFC Welterweight World Champion last week so I can’t figure out why there would be a problem facing Koscheck. Georges lost a fight, but it is not a good reason to give him weaker opponents.
UF : Does Georges loss will affect the probability that UFC comes to Montreal in 2007?
SP : I don’t think so. They have a lot to do at this time, more important things than coming to Montreal. If Georges win his next fight, no matter which one, Serra or Hughes, wins the belt, it could be interesting for the UFC to plan a title shot for Georges in Montreal. It all depends of UFC schedule regarding their recent acquisition of Pride FC and their Europe events. Not so long ago, I was absolutely certain they were going to come at Fall 2007, but I’m not so sure anymore.
UF : In interview with Montreal’s CKAC SPORT radio, Georges said he made some change in his personal and professional circle, and we could figure out he was talking about certain person around him, but what he meant wasn’t really clear... What did he talk about?
SP : Georges really a nice guy who always wants to please everybody. People sometimes asked him favours and Georges only accepts to please them. He now better understand that he has to take care of him and think about him above first.
UF : Georges misses many promotional activities and interviews recently. He didn’t went at Popeye’s store as he was supposed to for the announced autographs session (this session also was postponed once), he missed his interview with MMA Weekly radio, then missed another interview on CKAC SPORT radio. What did happen? Overcharged schedule, lack of organization, or simply misunderstanding?
SP : He didn’t went at the autograph session at Popeye’s because he was sick when he went back from Europe. Then, for the interview with CKAC radio, it was a bad timing. That called me at 12:30 to ask for an interview at 1:15pm. I refused because Georges just had a difficult weekend and was still sleeping when they called. So we asked for the day after and we made this interview as it was planned. When MMAWeekly tried to join us, we were in a Houston’s hotel, nothing was working in our room and there was no service at the reception desk. We talked, then the line cut. This wasn’t under our control.
UF : Recently, Zuffa LLC., UFC and WEC’s owner, also acquired Pride FC. As a manager, what are you thinking about this?
SP : This is awesome news for the fans, who’ll be able to see some fights which wouldn’t have been possible before. This is also great for the sport. There will be pretty big event by the end of the year. But as a manager, I can see things with different eyes. It is not such a good news because it will be harder to negotiate with only one major player. But generally, for most people, this is great and good for the sport’s growth.
UF : After the acquisition of WEC and WFA, is it possible than Zuffa could be interested by the acquisition of TKO?
SP : You better should asked Fertitta brothers…
UF : This year, TKO made two events at the Bell Centre. What about TKO Major League MMA’s growth in the past months?
SP : Everything is going well. Our assistance increased dramatically. There are always more and more people to our shows. We also received a lot of support from the business world. We also had a lot of very talented newcomers. Our two events at the Bell Centre were major success. And we have good reasons to think that on June 1st, it will be bigger than ever.
UF : Recently, you promote an event named «TKO Tourney». Will you pursue on this way to promote events out of Montreal?
SP : Yes, but I can’t mention dates for the moment. We are currently working on our three next events at the Bell Centre, then after, we’ll look for the tourney all round the province. I won’t have a lot of time this Fall to organize another TKO Tourney because I’ll be working hard to promote three events in 4 months in Montreal, but for sure, there will be other tourney events out of Montreal soon.
UF : There is a rumour about the fact some people from Quebec bought the legal right to promote an event in this town under TKO banner. What about this?
SP : I’ve never heard anything about this rumour.
UF : At TKO 29, you’ll promote a women’s fight for the first time. What motivates you to take the road of the women’s fighting promotion?
SP : I’m seeing this as a test, as a surprise effect. And I truly don’t know how the public will react. Valerie is training pretty hard and I want to give her the chance to fight. I always said I didn’t like women’s fight, but Valerie is training as hard as a guy, she fights well and we’re giving a show to our fan. If she can give a show, why not? We’ll see the public’s reaction then will be considering having Valerie again if everything goes well.
UF : Will TKO be promoting women’s fight regularly in a near future?
SP : We’ll see what will happen on June 1st…
UF : From the moment TKO announced Valerie Letourneau’s fight, many want to know who will be her opponent. Any names you are considering?
SP : We almost know who will fight Valerie on June 1st, but couldn’t talk about it. She accepted the fight, but we didn’t sign the contract officially yet.
UF : Steve Vigneault pulled out his championship fight against Jonathan Goulet for the second time because of a knee injury. Does this mean there is chance this fight might never happen again?
SP : The fight is definetly cancelled. Jonathan Goulet never want to sign for a fight against Vigneault again. But it is not Steve’s fault, he’s seriously injured. But we have to understand Goulet. He prepared twice for this fight against Vigneault in the past months… Jonathan still has the chance for the Welterweight title, then we’ll see. But this fight is not in TKO’s plans anymore.
UF : According to the informations you’ve got about his injury, is Vigneault’s career compromise?
SP : I don’t think so. It is the same kind of injury than Georges St-Pierre had a few months ago, except that for Vigneault, he wasn’t treated as fast as Georges.
UF : What about his career with TKO. Will we see him again in TKO when he’ll recover from his injury?
SP : For sure, when he’ll be in shape, he’ll be back. But as I said, is ranking will be affected and guys like Clements and Goulet will be better ranked. Steve will have to see at that moment what he want to do, then take a decision.
UF : There’s two LNAH hockey players who’ll make their debuts in MMA on June 1st, Steve Bosse and Jon Mirasty. Why did you chose to look over the hockey league to find some athletes to fight in MMA?
SP : The first I’ve signed was Steve Bosse, who is an excellent boxer and a charismatic guy who train seriously. He doesn’t want to fight for the money, neither to make a marketing stunt. He really wants to become a world champion. When I signed him, I’ve asked myself if he’ll do like Stephane Ouellet did : go to the gym and only gamble on his striking force instead of developing his ground game. But Steve is very serious. He’s the first who wanna learn everything about the fighting game. If he continues this way, I think he’ll dominate the heavyweight division in Canada and will be dangerous for any fighter. We really signed Bosse for his athletic skills. Yes he’s popular and he’s gonna sell a lot of tickets. But he could easily become one of the crowd’s favourite, and that is a good reason why he has his place with TKO.
Mirasty is the #2 of the north American hockey league. Actually, he was the first for four years before Bosse took his #1 “title”. When he learn that Steve was making his MMA debut, his manager called me and told me Mirasty was an excellent boxer who already won the Saskatchewan’s Golden Gloves. We don’t want TKO to become an hockey goon fighting circus. We don’t want to took for all the hockey goons from the LNAH. We didn’t really made any promotion around Mirasty, who’ll be fighting on the undercard. We’ll try, then we look what’ll happen.
I’m laughing at people who said they’re just hockey goons without any experience. They both have plenty of boxing experience. Mirasty and Bosse both are exceptional and experimented athletes and are more in shape than 50% of the newcomer we brought to fight at their debuts.
UF : Team Tomkins athletes and coaches are actually focussing on USA. Does this mean we won’t see them again in TKO?
SP : We offered a fight to Sam Stout, who was supposed to face Stephane Dube, but Dube injured himself during his fight against MacDonald and I had to call Shawn Tompkins to cancel the fight. Then the UFC called me for Sam Stout and he’ll be fighting Spencer Fisher, hopefully in June or July. So, the Stout vs Dube fight will be in September. There wasn’t any empty spot for Hominick in the June lineup so he’ll also be back in September. Chris Clements should be from the June 1st lineup.
I can barely talk about Chris Horodecki’s situation for the moment, because of legal issues. We’re currently in law court with the IFL concerning Horodecki’s case…
UF : And what about Krzysztof Soszynski’s heavyweight title defence?
SP : We didn’t took any action yet concerning Soszynski’s case. We are currently waiting for the results of our law suit against the IFL concerning Chris Horodecki’s contrat before, because it is almost the same situation for these two guys. What happened is that Soszynski and Horodecki was under contrat with TKO, then signed with the IFL. When they signed with the IFL, I was ok with this because Shawn Tompkins told me that the IFL agreed to let them fulfill their TKO contract in Montreal. Then, after some time, I realize Tompkins didn’t tell me the truth and that the IFL doesn’t want these guys to fight for TKO anymore. What the IFL didn’t consider is that theses guys was already under a valid contract with another organization before they put them under contract. That’s what the judge might probably tell the IFL. For sure, the IFL contracts still valid, but these guys will probably have the legal obligation to fulfill their commitment in Montreal...
UF : Will Chris Clements face Jonathan Goulet for the welterweight title on June 1st at the Bell Centre?
SP : This might be a possibility…
UF : You manage Jonathan Goulet and Patrick Cote’s career. Will we see them again in UFC soon?
SP : There is still 2 fights left to Jonathan Goulet’s contract, but he’s currently focussing on his championship fight in June. He’ll surely be back soon in UFC. Patrick Côté should be back in the UFC’s octagon this Fall.
UF : What happen with the TV reality show «Nouveau Gladiateur». We don’t hard anything about it for a long time and some candidates want to know if they still have to stay inactive and wait?
SP : We are developing it and the project is still in the plans. I know many athletes want to know what happen, but you know, there are much implications than the fighters in such a big televised project.
UF : You already old in interview you wanted to focus on you manager’s functions instead of the promotion. How are you dealing with your decision?
SP : It goes well. I hired somebody for the PR who is working on all that concerns the relations with the media. For the events, I have 2 or 3 person who are working to help me out with the promotion. I can’t say that tomorrow morning, I would be able to leave it into others hand, but in 2008, I might be able to mostly be there on events night and delegate some work to my employees in the weeks preceding the events.
